Mom in Elzenhoven, part 2

Mum in Elzenhoven from 28 April 2022 until 15 October 2022.

Elzenhoven is one of the care locations of Mijzo (scroll)! This small-scale location in Sprang-Capelle offers a long-term stay for elderly people who require varying degrees of care. For example, for clients with dementia or a physical condition(somatic care). In addition, there are two guest houses that people who, for example, have to recover from an operation, can use for a maximum of six weeks. With the control over their lives still firmly in their own hands, it is good living conditions for the elderly at the care location.

Typical Elzenhoven
Just like home
We do everything possible so that after the move you can continue your life as usual. The homely atmosphere, warm treatment and personal attention make Elzenhoven feel like home to many. The same applies to the location in the residential area and the recently renovated layout of the communal areas, group houses and flats with warm colours and materials. A great deal of attention is paid to your life and we strive to make your living conditions as pleasant as possible. For example, in one of the residential groups for people with dementia, you will come across various interactive, stimulating places such as photos, cupboards and sitting areas.

Group care
At Elzenhoven, you are still in control of your own life. When this becomes increasingly difficult, we discuss with you and your close relatives what additional care you may need. For instance, you can participate in group care. In this case, you will receive extra attention and guidance for a large part of the day in groups of eight people. Family members are always welcome to visit you or help with the day care activities.

Attention for religion
At Elzenhoven, ample attention is paid to your religious experience. Most clients are affiliated with one of the Protestant churches. The local Protestant-Christian community in Sprang-Capelle is a source of involved interaction. For example, there is a weekly closing service every Saturday in the Elzenhoven auditorium where everyone is welcome. After this Protestant service, coffee and tea are enjoyed together. Pastors also lead celebrations and there is a Bible circle. You can listen to church services held elsewhere via the church telephone.

What makes Elzenhoven Mijzo special… is the attention paid to my faith.

A source for the involved interaction with each other.

The Apartments
All 64 flats have a living-bedroom with a kitchen unit and cupboard space, and a bathroom with toilet. You may furnish and decorate your flat as you wish with personal furniture and belongings. There are also communal living rooms and everyone may use all public areas in the building. At Elzenhoven, you can also rent a studio or flat.

Activities
Everyone is welcome in the recreation room the Gouden Fazant. It is located on the ground floor at the entrance to Elzenhoven. The Gouden Fazant is open seven days a week and is a pleasant meeting place for clients and visitors. In the Gouden Fazant, coffee, tea and other drinks are available, as well as snacks. It is also possible to have a hot meal there. In the Gouden Fazant, you can obtain the weekly programme of activities that is organised daily. Elzenhoven offers a wide range of activities. For example, you can take part in singing groups, shuffleboard competitions and bingo. Creative afternoons are also organised and exercise classes are given.

In addition, Elzenhoven offers various facilities for relaxing. For example, you can go out on the electric double bike together with a family member, volunteer or visitor. You can reserve this via a staff member of the Gouden Fazant or a staff member of the Welzijn team. Family members and volunteers can cook together with you at the communal groups, on any day of the week. You can discuss this with the staff members of the residential groups. Elzenhoven also has a wellness bath. You can use this for sensory stimulation, but also for a moment of relaxation: for example, to watch a film from the bath, listen to music or use aromatherapy. The wellness bath can be reserved through a staff member.

Location
Elzenhoven is situated in a residential area in Sprang-Capelle where visitors can park freely. There are also a number of disabled parking spaces and a small parking space at the main entrance. If you are unable to find a parking space (e.g. due to crowds), you can park at the back of Elzenhoven in the Goudvink.

Expertise Elzenhoven / Mijzo

Dementia
Dementia is a collective term for diseases in which mental abilities deteriorate. If you are affected by dementia, your thinking, orientation and language skills diminish and your memory declines. Initially, this affects your short-term memory and, at a later stage, your long-term memory as well. Dementia may be accompanied by personality and behavioural disorders. There are various forms of dementia, the best known of which is Alzheimer’s disease.

Somatic care
Somatic care is care for people with a physical disorder. Do you suffer from (multiple) chronic physical complaints caused, for example, by a stroke, Parkinson’s disease, MS, ALS or joint disorders? And are you no longer able to live at home because of this? Then you can come to one of Mijzo’s care locations.

Wound care
The number of people with complex or difficult-to-heal wounds in the Netherlands is high and will continue to increase in the coming years, partly due to the ageing population. Complex wounds can have a negative impact on your quality of life. You may experience pain, sleeplessness, lethargy and limitations in mobility and function. You are also at greater risk of infection and recurring wounds. Good wound care is therefore essential. An efficient approach leads to fast wound healing.

ABOUT MIJZO:

Mijzo is the umbrella elderly care organisation, managing small scale elderly homes of which Elzenhoven is located in Sprang-Capelle.
Mission statement
With an open, inquisitive view of the future and based on the vision of positive health, Mijzo is the driving force behind the transformation of care to allow the elderly to shape and interpret their lives at home in their own way for as long as possible. As soon as this is no longer possible, we are there to support and guide them. We are there for the elderly, people with rehabilitation problems and people with chronic illnesses.

Mijzo stands for respectful attention. Attention for people, for our work and for each other. This is how we bring out the best in each other.

Vision
We want to live our lives and grow older in our own way. If that requires professional support, Mijzo is the right partner. Together with clients, their loved ones, smart technology and a good dialogue, we provide the desired support and care. We are leading in the expertise we offer. We are the driving force behind the necessary transformation to keep healthcare high quality, accessible and affordable. We offer our staff and volunteers space and encourage creativity, courage and personal growth and development. Only together do we make the difference. Every day again.

Vision on staff and volunteers
In an open organisation, where you can be yourself and where you are seen and appreciated, you experience freedom and space to assist clients in making their own choices and decisions, and to offer the support that the client needs. As an employee and volunteer, you have a healthy curiosity, you have guts and you learn every day, from the work and from your colleagues. You are given the opportunity and support to experiment, continue learning and discover, because in this way you contribute as a colleague to a future-proof work environment and to quality. Smooth cooperation between clients, relatives, employees and volunteers is essential. You are responsible for your own personal and career development. You are proud of your work, of Mijzo, of your team and of the added value you bring to clients and their environment. You can identify with the place where you work. More than in the past, staff and volunteers will be disconnected from nursing homes and will be present at home, in special housing forms or digitally at a distance. You don’t do this work alone. You get further when you work together.

Core values of Mijzo.

Own
Your existence belongs to you and no one else. You organise your life in your own way, the way you like it. We are happy to support you in your life challenges. You make your own choices.

You are independent and responsible. You are able to see the other person as they are. You give the other person respectful attention, and support them in their life challenges and own choices. Mijzo gives people the space to be who they are and encourages self-direction and ownership.

Discover
We would like to get to know you better, and together with you explore what life has in store for you and what the possibilities are.

You are naturally curious and you will be able to come up with creative solutions to create added value for the client. Mijzo strives for innovations to properly support clients and staff/volunteers, and to discover unknown and unprecedented possibilities for the future.

Open
We are open and honest. We listen to each other and recognise each other, even where we are different. We have the freedom and can take the space to say what we think and feel. We are open to developments, new discoveries and creative solutions. These are important conditions for a good dialogue that we conduct with each other in many different ways.

Together
Working together is fun and self-evident. We work together, clients, loved ones, volunteers, professionals and cooperation partners, because it makes us stronger and more fun. We make use of the diversity and each other’s talents in the various networks and communities and actively look for what can strengthen us even more.

The name Mijzo
De Riethorst Stromenland, Volckaert and Schakelring merged on 1 January 2021. Together, we will continue under the name Mijzo. Naturally, a new organisation needs a new name. A name that conveys what we stand for as a care organization and that is in line with our mission, vision and core values. It is important that clients recognise themselves in it and that the name suits our staff and volunteers. To achieve this, we involved representatives of clients, staff and volunteers in the process. Based on a number of brainstorming sessions, together we arrived at the new name and pay-off. A name that is embraced by all those involved and that fits the new organisation:

Mijzo
In this new name, the words My and Care come together. Mijzo is for people who want to live their lives in their own way. Even after the changes associated with getting older. Mijzo is for employees and volunteers who do their work with passion every day. Together, we discover the possibilities and are open to making our own choices.

What makes mijzo curious
is the story behind the clients. Because by really getting to know them, together we can look at the possibilities. By looking for creative solutions and innovation, we can support clients, staff and volunteers to discover unknown and unprecedented possibilities.

By looking after each other, together we make the difference.
Mijzo. Sees me.

LOGBOOK / NOTES ON CARE

Tuesday 7 June 2022:

This afternoon I went to see Mum and had a talk with Miranda, Mum’s pain counsellor, and Joanne, Mum’s personal assistant. Mum is currently receiving counseling for her (chronic) cystitis and other pain symptoms in consultation with the doctor employed by Elzenhoven / Mijzo. As for me, the pain consultant has very clearly discussed the treatment plan and I agree with the provisional treatment consisting of a combination of pain patches and paracetamol. The dosage will be carefully tested and reduced if necessary. All this can be found in Caren, where the care plan and the daily notes are also very carefully kept for us as family.

Pain consists of two aspects, physical and mental pain, both influence each other. Pain is dependent on individual life experiences. In the course of life, everyone builds up a personal relationship with pain. When you experience physical pain in a traumatic event, such as a car accident, your relationship with pain changes, because the physical pain gets a follow up. You experience fear, due to the unexpectedness of the accident. Fear is a form of mental pain. This mental pain also affects the way you experience physical pain. For example, grief has an impact on the headache experience, and so on.

Very nice, clear explanation and consultation, Miranda. A possible therapy for mum in the future with small animals is in the planning. Thank you.
